Cospicua Health Centre is located in Lion Street, Cospicua BLM-1921, close to Gavino Gulia Square.

Access to Services / Catchment area:

Access to the services is restricted to all those who live in Senglea, Cospicua, Vittoriosa and Kalkara..
One has the right to:
receive health care on the basis of one’s clinical need, not on the basis of lifestyle, skin colour, gender, or any sexual preferences other factors
emergency medical treatment at any time during opening hours
give or withhold one’s consent to medical or other care and treatment.

Patient Requirements:

There are a number of things which facilitates better and prompt service. Please remember to:
-bring any documents required. For example, ID card, Pink or Schedule V Cards, prescriptions, referral tickets if one has been referred to another clinic or any record cards which some clinic provide.
-bring and present any special ID cards that entitle you to certain privileges (such as Kartanzjan +75; Care Workers; People with Special Needs).
-give the physician or carer all the details about one’s condition, any past illnesses, hospitalisation, medication, allergies and any other matter relating to one’s health.
-report any unexpected changes in one’s condition.
-ask for further explanations if the condition or course of action is not fully understood.
-follow the treatment plan recommended by one’s physician or carer.
-ensure not to turn up without any appointment unless one is attending a clinic where the service is not by appointment.
-keep appointments and, when unable to do so, to notify the Health Centre or clinic.

Ante-Natal Clinic and Gynaecological Services

The gynaecologists and midwives at our clinic provide a number of services. These include:
-pregnancy tests (which do not require an appointment)
-ante-natal examinations
-smear tests
-gynaecological assessments
-family planning advice
-referral to hospital services as appropriate
-post-natal examinations.

Post-natal care eight weeks after delivery is available.
Services are limited to residents of Cospicua, Senglea, Vittoriosa and Kalkara.

Opening hours:

The clinic is open alternate Saturday between 8am. and 1pm. To fix an appointment kindly call reception.
If you are under 18 years and single, you must be accompanied by your guardian.

Anti-Coagulant Clinic/Point of Care

Point of care is a new service which has been extended to Cospicua Health Centre in July 2014. It is designed to gradually replace them present method of monitoring the International Normalisation Ratio (INR) monitoring in patients on warfarin therapy. During this session venous sampling is being substituted by a capillary blood drop from the finger by a simple pin prick. Newly installed machines have the advantage of providing the result immediately thus the GP can issue a prescription at the same time. Client need not wait for results and treatment to be sent at a later date.

This clinic is open on Monday,Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8am -12.00 noon (by appointment only).

Blood Investigations and other Tests

These are carried out as requested by a doctor. One may be referred for a blood test by a private family doctor, a Health Centre doctor or from a hospital department.
The appropriate paper or IT request forms are required as requested by the referring doctor.

An appointment is required to attend. For a better service the following is required:

-being punctual for appointment
-not turning up without an appointment
-informing the Health Centre if appointment cannot be kept
-not coming for a dressing after 7:30 pm or before 9:30 a.m.
-fasting before blood investigation if this is a pre-requisite as otherwise the appointment will have to be postponed.
-ID card, especially when calling for a blood investigation or another laboratory test.

Diabetes Clinic

The Diabetes Clinic is a family doctor run clinic co-shared with the Consultant Diabetologist at MDH.
Referral to this clinic is from the Diabetes & Endocrinology Unit at Mater Dei Hospital, but new cases may be seen at this clinic pending the hospital appointment. Referral by Health Centre and Private Family Doctors is possible.
The clinic is open on Tuesdays, Wednesday and Friday. Consultations with the diabetes nurses and the doctor are by fixed timed appointments.

With every visit, there is monitoring of:
-blood glucose level
-urine (for protein, glucose, acetone)
-blood pressure
-weight
-BMI
-HbA1c
-ACR
-Fundoscopy and foot examination
-other investigations which are considered necessary by the doctor.

The clinic will give advice on the diet, life style changes and any medications required.
Once a year, one is referred to an ophthalmologist for an eye examination, to a podiatrist and for routine blood investigations. Referral for preventive measures or for the treatment of complications is possible.

Dietician Clinic


The Dietician Clinic is run by a Healthcare Professional licensed to assess, diagnose and treat nutritional related disorders. These include:
-Malnutrition
-Obesity
-Diabetes
-Renal problems
-Hepatic problems
-Food allergies and intolerance
-Difficulty in swallowing
-Heart related conditions including hypertension and hyperlipidaemia

The service is offered as a one-to-one consultation during which meal plans based on the patient’s nutritional requirements are devised.

Attendance:
-A doctor’s referral is required for an appointment
-Patients are to set appointment directly with the dietician by phone at Cospicua Health Centre

Clinic Schedule:

Available on Monday, Thursday and Friday.

Electrocardiography Clinic

A resting ECG can be done at the Health Centre.
One can only have an ECG if referred by a doctor. Except in emergency cases, one will need an appointment. One can make an appointment by phoning the reception desk.

Opening hours:

The ECG clinic is open on alternate Mondays from 8am to 1:30pm.
After the ECG is made, a consultant physician will see and report on the results within a week.
It is important to:
-be punctual for the appointment
-not turn up without an appointment
-inform the Health Centre if one cannot keep one’s appointment
-bring the referral form requested by the doctor.

Family Doctor/General Practitioner Domiciary Service

When a medical consultation is needed and the medical condition prevents the patient from leaving home, a request for a domiciary visit should be made as early as possible.

On phoning, the following details will be requested:
-name and age
-address with clear directions
-telephone number
-some details on the condition and why a home visit is requested.

House number, the name of the house and any landmarks are requested.
Similarly, personal details will be recorded when requests for a telephone consultation are made.

Family Doctor/General Practitioner Service

The Family Doctor/General Practitioner Service provides the patient with the opportunity for:
-a consultation for any condition
-free investigations that are considered necessary and indicated
-a referral to a consultant when your doctor feels it is necessary
-a referral to other health care services when necessary
-emergency medical care during opening times

Opening hours:

The Family Doctor/General Practitioner service is open from 8am to 8pm on weekdays and 8am to 1pm on Saturday. No appointments are required.

Routine and repeat free drug prescriptions by appointment only. Appointments are made at the reception desk or by phone. Same day appointments are not normally given. For a medical certificate for absence from work attendance is from 8am to 11am except for shift workers in which case a certificate may be issued at any time that you are not on duty.

When investigations are ordered , the Family Doctor/General Practitioner will be given a choice between coming for blood results in the normal GP clinic or be referred to the CDMC​

Results of investigations requested by private medical practitioners will be sent to the requesting doctor and not to the patient involved.

Medical Consultant Clinic

This clinic is open on alternate Mondays from 8am till 1pm.

One may be referred to this clinic by the Health Centre doctor, the private family doctor or the hospital.

To make an appointment, please present the referral ticket at the reception desk. This will be vetted by Consultant and one will be contacted back and given an appointment date by phone and by post.

Appointments for follow-ups are given as indicated by the physician according to clinical need.

National Immunisation Service

This clinic is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.30am to 1.30pm and alternate Saturdays from 7.30am till 12 (noon).

Attendance to this clinic is by appointment only. For an appointment phone during clinic hours. No referrals are needed.

The immunisation record is required for the nurse to update.

Scheduled childhood immunisations recommended by the department for persons considered at risk are given free of charge.

Children who miss out on their immunisation for Hepatitis B and MMR carried out in schools can receive such immunisation at this clinic.

Physiotherapy Services

Clinic hours:
Monday to Friday 7:45 to 14:00
Alternate Saturdays 7:45 to 11:30

Appointments may be made by phone on 21667538 from 7:30 to 14:00 or by visiting the health centre with the referral.
Only clients who are 16+ and have a musculoskeletal condition are eligible to attend physiotherapy clinics at health centres.​

Podiatry Clinic

Attendance to this clinic is for screening and for treatment for any ailment of the feet. The clinic is by appointment. A referral is not required. Please call the reception desk for an appointment. A new service has been introduced; Patients may be referred for podiatric sports injuries on Thursdays.

Opening hours:

The clinic is open from Monday to Friday between 8am and 1.45pm and on Saturdays between 8am and 12:30 p.m.

Routine cutting of toe nails is not a service offered by the Podiatry clinic. If over 75 years old or is regarded as a high risk patient, one may, however, benefit from this service.

Pediatric patients are initially seen in this clinic but may be referred to B ‘Kara Podo-pediatric Clinic for further evaluation.

Port-A-CATH Clinic

Patients are referred from SAMOC for routine care post-chemotherapy.
Appointments are every Sunday.

Schedule V Clinic

Referrals to Schedule V Clinic are entitled to receive free medicines required for treatment and control of their condition.

Referral by a medical practitioner is required and referral ticket has to be left at reception. Patients will be contacted by phone and by post of the appointment date.

Schedule V Cards and DTC Permits issued from the Departments of Surgery, Gynaecology and Psychiatry at Mater Dei Hospital can only be renewed by the same department and cannot be renewed at the Health Centre.

Please remember to bring all the necessary documents to the clinic, including:
-the ID card
-the old card if requesting a renewal
-letter of appointment.

Speech Language Pathology Service

Speech language pathologists offer services to both children and adults. They assess, diagnose, indicate prognosis and prepare treatment programmes primarily related to problems of communication. Intervention is carried out in the clinic, at schools or in the home as determined by the speech language pathologist. Clinics are also held in the village government dispensaries (Bereg).

Services offered include:
-hearing and sensory impairments
-speech and language, grammar and pathological conditions
-articulation and phonological difficulties
-fluency difficulties (e.g. stammering)
-reading and writing problems (e.g. dyslexia)
-voice disorders, including vocal hygiene
-dysphagia (both children and adults)
-neurological conditions that affect communication (e.g. head injuries; stroke)
-post-surgery treatment (e.g. laryngectomy).

Eligibility and access:

Various professionals or carers may refer to a speech language unit, including teachers, doctors, nurses, psychologists and social workers. One can get in touch with our clinic directly.

Treatment/Emergency Clinic

A number of medical and nursing services are available at the treatment room. These include:
-treatment of emergencies
-daily injection of insulin for diabetic patients
-blood tests and other investigations
-treatment of wounds and change of dressings
-sutures (applying stitches to a wound)
-administration of injections, antibiotics and vitamins
-administration of nebuliser therapy (for the treatment of asthma).
-anti-coagulant clinic blood assessments
-leg ulcer therapy, by appointment from Sir Paul Boffa Hospital or from Tissue Viability Unit.

Eligibility and access:

All residents of Cospicua, Senglea, Vittoriosa and Kalkara may make use of these services. In case of emergencies, others may also attend.

Opening hours

The treatment room is open from 8am to 8pm on daily except on Saturday from 8am to 2pm. A nurse is always available, however no doctor is available on Sundays.

For a more effective services, the following schedule is advised:
-between 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.: insulin injections
-between 7:30 a.m. and 8.30 a.m.: blood tests and investigations (by appointment only)
-between 9:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.: change of dressings, treatment of wounds, removal of sutures and injections
The Treatment Room does not provide the above services outside the hours indicated except for special cases and by arrangement with the nursing staff.
