Access to services

One has the right to:

-Receive health care on the basis of one’s clinical need, not on the basis of lifestyle, skin colour, race, sex or any other factor.
-Receive emergency medical treatment at any time during opening hours.
-Give or withhold one’s consent to medical or other care and treatment.

Patient requirements

There are a number of things which facilitate better and prompt service. Please remember to:
-Bring any documents required. For example: ID​ card, Pink or Schedule V cards, prescriptions, referral tickets if one has been referred to another clinic or any record cards which some clinics provide.

-Bring and present any special ID cards that entitle you to certain privileges (such as Kartanzjan +75, Care Workers, People with Special Needs).

-Give the general practitioner or carer all the details about one’s physical condition, any past illnesses, hospitalisation, medication, allergies and any other matter relating to one’s health.

-Report any unexpected changes in one’s condition.

-Ask for further explanations if the condition or course of action is not fully understood.

-Follow the treatment plan recommended by one’s general practitioner and carer.

-Ensure not to turn up without any appointment unless one is attending a clinic where the service is not by appointment.

-Keep appointments and when unable to do so, to notify the Health Centre or clinic.

Anti Coagulation Clinic (Point of Care)

Point of care is a new service which has been extended to Qormi Health Centre in July 2014. It is designed to gradually replace them present method of monitoring the International Normalisation Ratio (INR) monitoring in patients on warfarin therapy. During this session venous sampling is being substituted by a capillary blood drop from the finger by a simple pin prick. Newly installed machines have the advantage of providing the result immediately thus the GP can issue a prescription at the same time. Client need not wait for results and treatment to be sent at a later date.

This clinic is open from Monday to Thursdays​ on 8.00 -10.30am (by appointment only).

Blood investigations and other tests

These are carried out as requested by a doctor. One may be referred for a blood test by a private family doctor, a Health Centre doctor or from a hospital department.

The appropriate paper or IT request forms are required as requested by the referring doctor.

An appointment is required to attend. For a better service the following is required:
Being punctual for appointment with the Green / Blue appointment ticket. .
Not turning up without an appointment.
Informing the Health Centre if appointment cannot be kept.
Not coming for a dressing before 10.00 am or after 7:30 pm.
Fasting before blood investigation if this is a pre-requisite as otherwise the appointment will have to be postponed.
ID card and the green / blue (MDH) appointment ticket especially when calling for a blood investigation or another laboratory test.

Chronic Kidney Disease Prevention Clinic

This is a specialized nurse-led clinic where patients are being educated about their condition and followed prior or while attending MOP at MDH.

Patients are being referred to this clinic by the Health centre GP/private GP or MOP at MDH.

This clinic is functional on every Thursday from 7.30 am till 6.15pm, by an appointment system.

Diabetes Clinic

The Diabetes Clinic is a general practitioner run clinic co-shared with the Consultant Diabetologist at MDH.

Referral to this clinic is from the Diabetes & Endocrinology Unit at Mater Dei Hospital, but new cases may be seen at this clinic pending the hospital appointment. Referral by Health Centre and Private Family Doctors is possible.

The clinic opens from Monday to Friday by an appointment system.
(Presently no clinic on Tuesdays until further notice)

With every visit, there is monitoring of:
Blood glucose level
Urine (for protein, glucose, acetone)
Blood pressure
Weight and height
BMI
HbA1c
Fundoscopy and foot examination
Other investigations which are considered necessary by the doctor.

The clinic will give advice on the diet, life style changes and any medications required.

Once a year, one is referred to an ophthalmologist for an eye examination, to a podiatrist and for routine blood investigation.

Referral for preventive measures or for the treatment of complications is possible.

Electrocardiography (ECG) Clinic

A resting ECG can be done at the Health Centre.

One can only have an ECG if referred by a doctor. Except in emergency cases, one will need an appointment. One can make an appointment by phoning the reception desk.

The ECG clinic is open on alternate Saturdays from 8am to 11:30am.

After the ECG is made, a consultant physician will see and report on the results within a week.

It is important to:
Be punctual for the appointment.
Not turn up without an appointment.
Inform the Health Centre if one cannot keep one’s appointment.
Bring the referral form requested by the doctor.

Glaucoma Clinic

The clinic provides screening tests for glaucoma. This service is available by appointment.
Screening is targeted at:
People who are 45 years old and over.
People who are 35 years old and over who suffer from diabetes
People who are 35 years old and over and have a family history of diabetes and/or glaucoma.

No referrals are needed. Kindly phone the clinic for an appointment.

The clinic opens on Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30am till noon.

GP Domiciary Service

When a home visit is needed and the medical condition prevents the patient from leaving home, a request should be made as early as possible.

On phoning, the following details will be requested:
name and age
address with clear directions
telephone number
some details on the condition and why a home visit is requested
house number, the name of the house and any landmarks

GP Services

The General Practitioner Service provides the patient with the opportunity for:
-A consultation for any condition.
-Free investigations that are considered necessary and indicated.
-A referral to a consultant when the doctor feels it is necessary.
-A referral to other health care services when necessary.
-Emergency medical care during opening times.
The General Practitioner service is open from 8am to 8pm on weekdays (Monday – Friday) and 8am to 1pm on Saturday. No appointments are required. Sunday no GP is available.

Routine and repeat free drug prescriptions by appointment only. Appointments are made at the reception desk or by phone. Same day appointments are not normally given. For a medical certificate for absence from work attendance is from 8am to 11am except for shift workers in which case a certificate may be issued at any time that you are not on duty.

Genecology and Obstetric Clinic

This clinic operates on Fridays by appointment, receiving referrals by the health centre GPs as well as GPs working in private practice.

To make an appointment for gynaecological consultation, please present a Ticket of Referral at the health centre’s reception desk any day of the week.

For an antenatal or postnatal visit, please phone on the clinic day and ask for Gynae clinic nurses.

Please bring with you your Identity Card, appointment booklet and any relevant documents.​

Medical Consultant Clinic

This clinic is open on Friday from 8am till 3:00pm.

One may be referred to this clinic by the Health Centre doctor, the private family doctor or the hospital.

To make an appointment, please present the referral ticket at the reception desk. This will be vetted by the Consultant Physician and one will be contacted back and given an appointment date by phone and/or by post.

Appointments for follow-ups are given as indicated by the physician according to clinical need.

Medical Imaging (X-Ray) Department

The Medical Imaging Department provides all types of X-rays except those falling under special procedures (that is, all those procedures that require a contrast medium).

Eligibility and access – Residents of Qormi, Siggiewi and Zebbug may attend the clinic.

The clinic is open daily from 8 am and 1 pm. No appointment is required.

One may be referred from Mater Dei hospital or from a Health Centre. Private family doctors may also request medical imaging investigations.

Patients may have their result after 10 days, without the need of an appointment, at the GP clinic.

It is important to inform the radiographer if one may be pregnant. Do not wear clothes containing metal or other radio-opaque materials.

National Immunisation Service

This clinic is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7.30am to 1.30pm.

The clinic is also open on alternate Saturdays from 7.30am to noon.

Attendance to this clinic is by appointment only. For an appointment phone during clinic hours. No referrals are needed.

The immunisation record is required for the nurse to update.

Scheduled childhood immunisations recommended by the department for persons considered at risk are given free of charge.

Children who miss out on their immunisation for Hepatitis B and MMR carried out in schools can receive such immunisation at this clinic.

Ophthalmic Clinic

The eye care services are provided by the optometrist and the ophthalmic nurse.

The family doctor or the Health Centre doctor may refer to this clinic. One may be referred from the Diabetes Clinic, the hospital and school children may be referred by the school health services.

The clinic is open Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 3.00pm excepting public holidays.
Should the need arise the clinic may be open on additional days.

The referral ticket has to be shown at reception for all appointments. Patients will be contacted later by phone and by post at a later date.

Physiotherapy Services

Clinic hours
Appointments for physiotherapy services are available
-Monday to Friday 7:45 to 14:00
-Alternate Saturdays 7:45 to 11:30

Appointments
Appointments may be made by phone or by visiting the health centre with the referral.
Only clients who are 16+ and have a musculoskeletal condition are eligible to attend physiotherapy clinics at health centres.

Podiatry Clinic

Attendance to this clinic is for screening and for treatment for any ailment of the feet.

Assessing blood circulation of the foot as requested by the doctor. ( Doppler studies).

The clinic is by appointment. A referral is not required. Please call the reception desk for an appointment.

The clinic is open from Monday to Friday between 8am and 2pm and on Saturdays between 8am and 12:45pm.

Routine cutting of toe nails is not a service offered by the Podiatry clinic. If one suffers from diabetes or from circulatory lesions of the feet, one may, however, ask for this service.

Schedule V Clinic

Referrals to Schedule V Clinic are entitled to receive free medicines required for treatment and control of their condition.

Referral by a medical practitioner is required and referral ticket has to be left at reception. Patients will be contacted by phone and/or by post of the appointment date.

Schedule V Cards and DTC Permits issued from the Departments of Surgery, Gynaecology and Psychiatry at Mater Dei Hospital can only be renewed by the same department and cannot be renewed at the Health Centre.

Please remember to bring all the necessary documents to the clinic, including:
ID Card.
The old card Yellow card.
List of all medications.
The letter of appointment.

Speech Language Pathology Services

Speech language pathologists offer services to both children and adults.

They assess, diagnose, indicate prognosis and prepare treatment programmes related to problems of communication.

Intervention is carried out in the clinic, at schools or in the home as determined by the speech language pathologist. Clinics are also held in the village government dispensaries (Bereg).

Medical problems/conditions attended to include:
-Hearing and sensory impairments.
-Speech and language immaturity, grammer and pathological conditions.
-Fluency problems (for example: stammering).
-Reading and writing problems (for example: dyslexia).
-Voice disorders, including vocal hygiene.
-Feeding (both children and adults).
-Neurological conditions that affect communication (for example: head injuries, stroke).
-Post-surgery treatment (for example: laryngectomy).

Various professionals or carers may refer to a speech language unit, including teachers, doctors, nurses, psychologists and social workers. One can get in touch with our clinic directly.

Visits at this clinic are by appointment only. For an appointment, kindly contact the reception desk.

Treatment/Emergency Clinic

A number of medical and nursing services are available at the treatment room. These include:
Treatment of emergencies.
Daily injection of insulin for diabetic patients.
Blood tests and other investigations.
Treatment of wounds and change of dressings. (by appointment)
Sutures (applying of stitches to a wound).
Administration of injections, antibiotics and vitamins.
Administration of nebuliser therapy (for the treatment of asthma).
Anti-coagulant clinic blood assessments.
Leg ulcer therapy – by appointment from Sir Paul Boffa Hospital or from Tissue Viability Unit.

All residents of Qormi, Zebbug and Siggiewi may make use of these services. In case of emergencies, others may also attend.

The treatment room is open from 7am to 7.45pm on weekdays, Sundays including Public Holidays and on Saturday from 8am to 2pm. A nurse is always available whilst a doctor is only available till 8pm on weekdays and till 1pm on Saturday.

The Treatment Room does not provide the above services outside the hours indicated except for special cases and by arrangement with the nursing staff.

Well Baby Clinic

Monitoring and recording of children’s development and advice on immunisation and feeding.
After your baby is born, you will receive an appointment by mail for the baby’s first visit at Well Baby Clinic situated within the Health Centre. This visit takes place when the baby is around 6 – 8 weeks of age. If your baby was born at a private clinic or hospital, you can still phone for an appointment at the clinic. The 6-8 week examination is usually booked on the same day as the first vaccination is due.
Routine visits are carried out when your baby is:
-6 – 8 weeks old
-8 months old
-18 months old.
All these visits are by appointment which you will receive by mail. Change of appointment may be made by phone on the clinic day.
Please bring the ‘Baby’s Book’ you are given from the Obstetrics Ward when you bring your baby for the visit.

The Well Baby Clinic at Qormi Health Centre operates on Fridays.
Between 12.30pm and 2pm parents may drop in at the Clinic to check their baby’s weight without a need for appointment.
